General Features
Steenbeck film editing machines distinguish themselves by design, reliability and stability.

The main picture and sound drive elements are arranged on a single heavy duty rigid aluminium deck which is precision machined to provide a stable and reliable operation over long periods.
The picture and sound film paths are designed to allow for simple and safe lacing of the film which facilitates fast operation.
Each film path can be individually selected by a push switch adjacent to the main speed control which engages or disengages it to the main drive utilising magnetic clutches and brakes. Each disengaged film path can then be adjusted by hand whilst the main drive is stationary. This enables Sync to be easily adjusted between the picture and the separate sound tracks. The paths disengaged are held by a braking system when the machine drive is operated so that their position is maintained.
The most important aspect of the design of the machine is to care for the film.

The main deck and the film take-up drives are all fitted within a rigid housing providing excellent vibration free stability at all loads and at maximum speed.
The machine tabletop is coated with a matt, solvent resisting laminate.
A ground glass illuminated panel is provided for visual picture inspection.
The machine is mounted on pedestals, which contain most of the electronics, and which are fitted with large castors allowing the machine to be easily moved.

The original concept of the machine, enhanced by the latest developments, ensures the operator's comfort by good ergonomic layout of all the working elements of the deck, the film take-ups and the required controls, all being well arranged within easy reach of the operator.

Picture:
The picture is projected via an optical compensation system using an 18 facet revolving prism. Accurate film transport is assured by a revolving sprocket ring which guarantees a smooth film transport maintaining excellent picture steadiness whilst, most importantly, taking care of the film stock. The picture quality and steadiness are maintained at all speeds in both forward and reverse directions.
The picture exposure system utilises a special condenser lens and filter system providing an exceptionally bright and crisp image whilst ensuring that damaging heat is removed from the exposure light thus protecting the film. The exposure light is automatically dimmed when the transport is stopped to allow for constant viewing of the "still" frame without fear of heat damage to the stationary film. The 100W Quartz Halogen exposure lamp can be changed and adjusted from the top of the drive deck.
The projection system is fitted with highly polished front surface coated mirrors. A hard protective coating ensures long life with constant picture quality and facilitates easy cleaning. The close grained screen is of a special material, the surface of which is insensitive to dust and dirt and is easily cleaned.

Sound:
The amplifiers are of a modular design and construction. Every machine can be fitted with a maximum of 7 pre-amplifiers for magnetic and optical sound as required. Linear sound fader controls allow the operator to "mix" the sound from all available tracks as required.
A summing amplifier provides control of the overall volume, treble and bass levels to suit any individual requirement.
Another two important features, fitted as standard, are a Dynamic Compressor and Automatic Muting at high speeds, both of which enhance user comfort.
The sound is finally fed to a 2-way loudspeaker of the bass reflex type by a high quality 30 Watt power amplifier all of which guarantee excellent sound reproduction from both magnetic and optical sound tracks.
Headphone output is also provided to enable the machine to be operated in a "quiet" area whilst still providing the user with a high quality sound reproduction.
"Com-opt" and "Com-mag" sound reproduction is possible on all machines to enable reproduction of combined optical or magnetic edge sound track. (35mm: Com-opt - 16mm : Com-opt - Com-mag)

A Balanced Line output can be provided, on request, to enable the sound "mix" to be transferred to other equipment, e.g. digital recording systems etc.

The machines are provided with "single track sound heads" and "mono" sound systems as standard. On request all sound models can be fitted with either multi-track sound heads, user "mixed" into the mono system, or into a full stereo sound system comprising dual power amplifiers and matched speakers either side of the picture hood for best stereo effect. Again stereo balanced line outputs and stereo headphone outputs are then available.

Sep-opt sound reproduction is available as an option on all 4, 6 or 8 plate machines of both 16 and 35mm formats to enable reproduction of separate optical sound tracks.

Speed control:
The famous Steenbeck "paddle" control gives an easy operation of the machine at all speeds. The control has a smooth operation providing an equally smooth speed control of the machine varying the speed from stop through to the maximum speed in a continuously varied manner. The control is "magnetically" indented at sync speed, normal high speed, maximum speed and stop in both forward and reverse directions to provide an easy and unique control system. This system has to be "felt" in operation to fully appreciate the ease and accuracy in which such a powerful machine can be operated. The speed of the standard 35mm machines can be varied continuously from 0 - 100fps (frames per second) in both forward and reverse and the standard 16mm machines from 0 - 200fps. The sophisticated electronic control system "ramps" the machine speeds in both acceleration and deceleration to ensure that whatever the request made by the operator, the machine will not damage the film but will still react to the speed changes required. All machines will, by operation of the "paddle" control, stop from sync speed to zero within a frame to facilitate accurate editing.

The Sync speed is switchable from the front panel for either 24 or 25 fps. A Sync speed of 18 or 30 fps is also available on request.

Counter:
The Steenbeck-Universal counter is standard equipment. This counter provides a switchable display for all formats, length in metres/decimetres or footage/frames or frames only, elapsed time in mins/secs/frames for 18, 24 and 25fps. (30 fps optional) When selecting a new format the counter converts the display from the previous format thus enabling the operator to work in e.g. footage/frames and get the running time in mins/secs/frames of the film length at any time.
The counter also has a memory function allowing separate sections to be "measured", stored, a new section "measured", and finally the original display to be recalled.
The system has a single key to zero the counter and it operates in a differential manor i.e. in reverse the counter increments from zero displaying a negative figure which facilitates length or running times to be checked from the "tale" to the "head" of the roll with ease.

A sound track differential display is fitted as standard in the larger machines e.g. 6 and 8 plate versions. The counter then also provides a sound differential display of each sound path, in frames, with respect to the picture. This allows the user, by simple operation of a toggle switch, to advance or retard the selected sound path, either whilst the main drive is stationary or running at any speed, in order to adjust the synchronization between the relevant sound track and the picture. The difference is then displayed to enable the film or sound to be "cut" to correct the error. The operation of this differential shift can be selected by the user from the front panel to be either an analogue shift or a full frame differential to facilitate the final correction cut.

In conjunction with the universal counter an optional manually operated keypad enables many other additional controls and automatic functions to be realized including looping, goto at high-speed etc.
